The Inner Solar System

The inner Solar System
The planets of the inner Solar System
The size of the orbits of each planet are to scale, although the size of the planets themselves are much too large.

The inner Solar System is the region where the terrestrial planets and the asteroid belt are found. These objects are mainly composed of rock and metals. All the inner planets have impact craters and volcanoes. Venus, Earth and Mars all have atmospheres and weather patterns.

The asteroid belt is the region between Mars and Jupiter and contains millions of objects. The asteroids are thought to be objects left over from the formation of the solar system, which couldn’t stick together to make a larger object because Jupiter’s gravitational pull kept them apart.

The dwarf planet Ceres is also found in the asteroid belt.
