The Outer Solar System

The outer Solar System
The planets of the outer Solar System
The size of the orbits of each planet are to scale, although the size of the planets themselves are much too large.

The outer Solar System is the region where the giant planets and their large moons are found. Many short-period comets also orbit in this region. The outer planets are mainly composed of gases and ices. Together the four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, make up 99% of the mass that orbits the Sun.

The icy comet-like bodies that orbit the Sun in this region are known as Centaurs.
