The Liverpool Telescope is part of the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), which is a group of abut 20 telescopes operated by many different nations. The United Kingdom currently operates five of the telescopes at the ORM. The observatory site is over 2,200 metres above sea level and perches on the edge of an extinct volcano. The volcano itself has collapsed into the sea to form the Caldera de Taburiente, which is the largest caldera in the world - a huge crater on the northern part of the island.
